Hannah's Story -- Click on a photo to start the slide show

Hannah was born July 07 in an Iowa puppy mill. Her beautifully marked face rests on a thin body, with long, long legs. Likely she'll fill out to less than 20 lbs.

New Beginning, the shelter that released Hannah, is in a small town south of the Quad Cities. It's part of a family home converted into a kennel.

Angie the shelter director (in the middle, between two GCCR volunteers) goes out looking for dogs that would otherwise be euthanized. Dogs are kept in crates in a very limited space. Dogs put on the floor can run from the kennel into the family room if the door is not blocked. Angie (in the middle, with GCCR volunteers) took Hannah in when she was four months and kept her in isolation with kennel cough in a crate in the kitchen. The cough persisted, became pneumonia, and it was apparent to Angie and her veterinarians that every attempt at medicating had failed. An xray showed a disturbing mass in Hannah's lung.

Hannah went to live as a foster with Linda a Vet Tech at VCA Aurora Animal Hospital. Linda and Dr Brett Wasik, a specialist in internal medicine, moved carefully through several weeks of antibiotics and diagnostics, hoping to combat the infection. Hannah's condition remained unchanged and the mass could become a threat to Hannah's future wellbeing. In April 08 the VCA staff proceeded to remove one of the seven lobes in Hannah's lungs.

A half hour after the surgery Hannah was already alert. She greeted Linda, gave her a kiss, and then laid back down to sleep some more. Linda saw the lobe that was removed. It was all shriveled and the surgeon said it was clearly the right decision to remove it.

Despite her illness and after the surgery, Hannah remained a puppy through and through. Getting a photo of her NOT moving was tough! Her favorite position? Stretching out that long, lanky body.

Hannah rested for several weeks. You could fall into her deep brown eyes.

Hannah's forever family welcomed her in May 08. The family of three adults Leigh Ann, Bob and Bryan lives in Glenview. Bryan is a vet tech student in Tinley Park (what a commute!). They have a fenced yard where Hannah can stretch out in a gallop.

Hannah's illness never affected her appetite! Her lean body craves tons of food.

Trevor a 16 months old Cavalier runs the household, has tons of toys scattered throughout, and is given huge affection by all. Trevor has been through intermediate obedience and mom Leigh Ann is interested in challenging Hannah's very bright mind with training and lots of doggie activities. When folks are away at work Trevor and Hannah will be at a cage free doggy day care that is highly recommended by Susan the home visitor. Sounds like a neat place for a dog to spend its time http://www.playfulpaws.com/services.htm

Trevor and Hannah worked out sharing toys, and when the game's afoot there's lots of energy from the two young pups!
