Find Your New Best Friend
Want to adopt a Cavalier?
At Greater Chicago Cavalier Rescue, we're committed to finding the best possible home for each dog in our care. That means we focus on making thoughtful, individualized matches based on each dog’s unique needs.
As a result, not every applicant will be matched, but your application helps us get to know our potential adopters and ensures that, when the right dog comes along, we’re ready.

Want to Adopt a Needy Cavalier?

-
GCCR's adoptable dogs are fostered in Chicago, its suburbs, Wisconsin, and northern Indiana.
-
If you're unsure if you live within a covered area, please send your city and state to adoption@gccavalierrescue.org before completing an application.
-
Due to the high level of interest in adopting, we often receive more applications than we have dogs available. We thoughtfully consider each application, though not every applicant will be matched with a GCCR Cavalier.

GCCR Adoption Process
-
Application Received: Your adoption application will be acknowledged via email after submission.
-
Matching Process: Our Placement Coordinators will work to match you with a rescued Cavalier whose needs align with your home and lifestyle. You'll receive information about the dog, and the foster caregivers will arrange an introduction. If a match isn’t available immediately, you’ll be placed on a waiting list.
-
Home Visit: A GCCR volunteer will contact you to schedule a home visit. In most cases, the volunteer will bring a Cavalier (not necessarily available for adoption) to observe how your household—including any resident pets—interacts with a new dog. The visit is also an opportunity for us to learn more about your home, lifestyle, and preferences so we can make the best possible match. Just as importantly, it’s a chance for you to ask questions, share any concerns, and learn more about the adoption process and what to expect.
-
Application Review: After the home visit, you’ll be notified whether you’ve been approved to adopt.
-
Ongoing Consideration: Each time a new rescue enters our program, Placement Coordinators revisit the waiting list to identify the best fit. If you're waiting, we encourage you to stay in touch and let us know you're still interested. Email adoption@gccavalierrescue.org if you are interested in a particular Cavalier or to let us know you are still interested in adopting.
-
Reference Checks: We check references only after a potential match has been identified.
-
Thoughtful Placement: We want both the applicant and the foster to reflect on the match before proceeding with the adoption. Our goal is to avoid impulse placements and ensure a lasting, loving home.

What to Consider When Adopting a Cavalier

Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are loving, devoted companions, and we want to ensure the best possible match for both our dogs and their adopters. Many of the Cavaliers in our care have unique needs, and understanding these helps set everyone up for success.
-
Health Considerations: Some rescued Cavaliers may be predisposed to certain health conditions, which can require ongoing veterinary care. Being prepared for potential medical needs helps ensure a happy, healthy life together.
-
Safety & Environment: Cavaliers are curious and social by nature. Because they may be inclined to follow people or chase small animals, a securely fenced yard is recommended for some dogs to help keep them safe.
-
Companionship Needs: Cavaliers thrive on human connection and do best in homes where they are not left alone for long periods of time. They are happiest when they can be close to their people.
-
Individual Needs: Each dog comes to us with their own background and personality. Some may need extra time, patience, or support as they adjust, whether due to past experiences, medical needs, or both.
-
Special Circumstances: Certain Cavaliers require more experienced adopters who are comfortable managing specific behavioral or medical needs. For those prepared to take this on, the bond can be incredibly rewarding.
-
Senior Cavaliers: Dogs aged 7 and older are often wonderful companions. They tend to be more settled and bring just as much love—often with a calm, easygoing nature.
-
Families with Children: Some Cavaliers may not have experience with children or may be more comfortable in quieter environments. We consider each dog’s needs carefully when making matches.
-
Our Adoption Process: To ensure the best fit, all applicants participate in a home visit and provide personal references.
